Artist Numero Uno: Faye Blais

The Silverlake Lounge, upon first glance, does not seem to be the kind of place in which one would expect to find great talent. Due to its location on Sunset Boulevard, however, it has become a mecca for musicians. Last night was my first (and hopefully not the last) visit to the Lounge, during which I had the opportunity to hear what the "Cherry Pickin' West Coast Tour" has to offer.

Three solo songstresses hailing from Canada have united to showcase their catchy tunes on a 2-month junket along the West Coast. Jacquie B., Sarah Burton, and Faye Blais are each their own artist, but it is a true show of talent that they are able to perform so well together, in harmony...literally! And though their vocals and instrumentals melded perfectly, my attention was most captured by the dreaded Faye Blais. And when I say "dreaded" I mean her hair, not a power to induce fear.

A Toronto native with a feisty spirit, Faye classifies herself as a "jazzy-bluesy indie/folk" musician, with the guitar-strumming and soulful vocals to prove it. Her presence on stage at the Lounge was entertaining, inviting with just a hint of biting wit. She is definitely an artist to watch. Faye is a truly authentic singer/songwriter with a REAL personality, which is something that is missing from many of today's most popular acts!

You'll like Faye Blais if you like: Ingrid Michaelson, Regina Spektor, Kate Nash, Alanis Morissette (Faye's fellow Canadian), or Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley.

Be sure to visit her personal site and MySpace! Faye has posted many of her songs and videos on both sites, and she has set up a blog as well to keep in touch with her friends and fans.

Here's Faye's website!

Aaaaaaaand here's Faye's MySpace page :)

Roxi G.'s Lyric Pick: "Your clothes are hung
So neatly inside
The closet where my bones hide
There may be dust on the box
Where I’ve left
All the ways that I’ve been before
I tugged and I pulled
Like you knew that I would
But you’d glued the lid shut
To be sure" - "Something's Changed" by Faye Blais

TGIF, and I hope you have a fantastic weekend!

Peace and Pianos,
